Mobile Health Platform Provides Life-Saving, Medical-Treatment Information to Caregivers, Healthcare Providers & Emergency Responders

Adrenal Insufficiency United & Backpack Health Tap Information Access to Help People with Adrenal Insufficiency (AI)

Springfield, OR, and Dover, MA – July 30, 2018 – Adrenal Insufficiency United (AIU) has partnered with Backpack Health, LLC to enable AI patients and caregivers to navigate the complex medical and payer system having ready access to important medical information about their condition in order to receive ongoing care, especially during an emergency.

“This alliance with Backpack Health enables our community – people who risk death for lack of emergency medical treatment – to open new channels of communication between patients and medical providers,” said Jennifer Knapp, executive director of Adrenal Insufficiency United. “The Backpack Health app enables our community to improve daily self-management and ensure our health information is accessible to the healthcare community when needed 24/7.”

Commonly, AI patients and caregivers prepare for the possibility of an adrenal crisis by having an emergency corticosteroid injection available; wearing a medical-alert ID; and having close-at-hand emergency instructions such as insurance information, medications and proper dosages taken, and contact information for physicians and health professionals on their care team.

The Backpack Health app seeks to reduce AI-related suffering and the risk of mortality that can occur within 30 minutes in the event of an acute adrenal crisis if they do not receive essential emergency intervention and treatment. During an adrenal crisis, having immediate access to an individual’s health information is critical to providing treatment when minutes can save lives.

“Partnering with Adrenal Insufficiency United to support their mission and give added confidence to people affected by adrenal insufficiency demonstrates how information access is part of the expected care,” said Jim Cavan, founder, president and CEO of Backpack Health. “This AIU connection demonstrates how secure cloud-based information access has become integral to people needing to manage their health details, care and communication.”

Through Backpack Health, the AIU patient community will now have access to their personalized, comprehensive medical information and documents in one central location through the portable, multi-lingual Backpack Health app. Available for iPhone, Android and desktop, AIU members can access the Backpack Health full features:

  • Create individual and caregiver profile information
  • Provide access for others to co-manage patient profiles
  • Upload easily documents, images, videos and audio files
  • Share information with medical professionals or others, such as emergency information, health history, medications, allergies, etc. -- easily converted to PDFs
  • Translate information into other languages, that is important when traveling
  • Access all information stored in the app without internet connection

About Adrenal Insufficiency and Adrenal Insufficiency United

Adrenal insufficiency occurs when the body is unable to produce enough cortisol and often aldosterone. These two hormones help to maintain and regulate basic functions in the body such as blood pressure, the immune system, blood glucose, salt balance, electrolytes, heart muscle tone, and contribute to bone health. Cortisol also helps the body respond to stress. Adrenal Insufficiency affects children and adults of all races and ethnicities. There are different types and severities of adrenal insufficiency caused by a variety of conditions.

An adrenal crisis is a life-threatening situation which requires immediate medical care. Due to the systemic physiologic nature of Cortisol in the body, the warning signs of an Adrenal crisis are non-specific, and can include symptoms such as severe vomiting and diarrhea, leading to dehydration, changes in blood pressure, and altered consciousness. If an adrenal crisis is left untreated and Cortisol is not replenished within 30 minutes, an Adrenal crisis can lead to cardiac arrest, shock, coma and death.

Adrenal Insufficiency United (AIU) is working to improve the lives and empower those affected by adrenal insufficiency through advocacy, awareness, collaboration, education, research and support. AIU is committed to improving patient care through research and addressing the wide variety of issues faced by the AI community. Learn more at
