Backpack Health Appoints Sara Aswegan Chief Commercial Officer

Former Shire and Ultragenyx Exec Joins Backpack Health to Develop Global Connections, Strengthen Brand and Enhance Visibility of Patient Empowerment Platform

Dover, MA – October 4, 2018 – Backpack Health, a mobile and cloud-based app that helps people with chronic, serious and rare health concerns better manage and access personal health information, care and communication, announced today that Sara Aswegan has been appointed Chief Commercial Officer and Managing Director.

Aswegan will lead initiatives that expand Backpack Health brand visibility, enhance user experience and forge new partnerships and affiliations with health organizations, pharma and medical device companies, and advocacy groups and foundations.

“It’s long accepted that information is power. Backpack Health is emerging as the premier patient empowerment tool, and we welcome Sara to our global leadership,” said Jim Cavan, Founder and CEO of Backpack Health. “Having guided the growth of multiple multi-billion-dollar health portfolios with knowledge of the therapeutic innovation sector, Sara will enable Backpack Health to be a connective community of value for patients, their caregivers, physicians, payers and biopharma innovations in digital health.”

Aswegan brings more than 20 years of global leadership experience in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. A rare disease expert, her experience within medical and biotech companies and patient foundations on market entry, stakeholder management and commercial strategy will elevate Backpack Health’s conversations within the health ecosystem. Aswegan served previously as Senior Vice President for Ultragenyx, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on bringing novel treatments of rare and ultra-rare diseases to the market. She served as Vice President and Franchise Head at Shire AG, where she oversaw the global MPS Franchise and later served as Vice President and Global Strategy Head for their GI/Hepatology Franchise.

“People with chronic, serious and rare health concerns can endure unnecessary challenges and suffering. Information unites the health ecosystem and rallies scientists and physicians to put the patient first and work towards fulfilling their unmet needs,” said Aswegan. “I am proud to help guide the development of Backpack Health, an invaluable digital resource and patient empowerment tool that allows those affected by chronic, serious and rare conditions – and their care circles – more easily navigate their health journeys, communicate with healthcare professionals, and promote better care for themselves, their loved ones, and their communities.”
